Recommend W Hotel Barcelona, Spain for beach goers, party animals, weekend getaways, spa getaways, tourists visiting Barcelona, pre and post cruise hotel, business conference. The hotel exudes a ‘hip’ atmosphere, its lobby buzzes with well-dressed international clientele, promptly booked into the new five star in town. It has a very modern feel and provides amazing views of the beaches, Mediterranean sea and the city of Barcelona.

Pros: Location, views, easy access to best beach, restaurant choices, great spa, fitness facility and hotel pool, very good business and conference center, great entertainment and nightlife. Cons: can be loud on the weekends, crowded especially during check in and check out time. Small check in area for the size of this hotel. No immediate public transportation access. Bottom line: I recommend W Hotel Barcelona, Spain with 4.6/5 rating.

 

Shaped like a large mirrored sail, W Hotel Barcelona is clearly visible from the beaches and the city. With a total of 26 floors and 472 rooms, it is an important new contender for the city’s most prestigious hotel. On approaching the hotel, you will be dwarfed by its looming modern exterior. The lobby area follows suit – a large expanse of mute colored sofas and large coffee tables lead to large floor to ceiling windows overlooking the sea.

Location

At the entrance to the Port of Barcelona and very beginning of sandy beach lies new iconic landmark of this city, W Hotel Barcelona. ​It sits directly in front of Sant Sebastia Beach. It is a ten minute walk from the marina and restaurants of Passeig de Joan de Borbó. It is a twenty minute walk from the Barceloneta metro station and the old town of El Born as well as Las Rambles. There is a short walk to public transportation and closest metro station is 10-15 minutes away.

Reservations

I used​ ​SPG.com​ website and booked ​W Hotel Barcelona ​using Starwood rewards points at ​20000 SPG points per night with 5th night free, that’s 80000 points for 5 night stay.

Average rate at this hotel for this time of the year, April 2018, was 525 euros/nigh, making this a $3150 savings at 3.93 cents/point.!!!!!

Booking process is always a breeze no matter if you are using a SPG or Marriott.com site in the future. ( After August 1st 2018, you can only book via Marriott.com) Immediate email confirmation of points deduction and reservation arrived in my mailbox, and I was set.

Arrival

 

We arrived at W Hotel, Barcelona at 3 pm, so I was not worrying about room being ready after 8h drive from Granada, Spain. Well dressed handsome young men welcomed us at the entrance, handling our luggage and escorting us toward a check in area.

Although check in area was crowded (large business conference was taking place), we did not have to wait and utilized dedicated Platinum SPG check in desk. Here another group of well dressed good looking associates checked us in and upgraded to “Wonderful King Bed Room” on 20th floor. We promptly went upstairs as our luggage was delivered by a bellman.

 

Room

 

All room at this hotel with the exception of suites are exactly same size, 40 m2 or 431 sq. ft., King bed or 2 twin. Frankly the only difference between them is the name, wonderful, fabulous, etc., and floor location and view (East or West).

View, however, is to die for.

With full wall to ceiling windows, and high floor location, our room sported views all the way from the Port of Barcelona with its luxury yachts and cruise ships, to ​Passeig de Joan de Borbó, sandy beaches and the seas, and Olympic village in the distance. Below you could see both Hotel pools and DJ setting up for the evening.

All Starwood hotels feature “heavenly bed” so sleep comfort is never a question. Bathroom was modern with no bathtub, featuring very large luxurious shower. Usual amenities included mini bar, coffee maker, safe etc.

 

Welcome bottle of Champagne was waiting on ice.

 

Bars

 

W Hotel Barcelona is a party destination attracting “pretty people” from around the globe making its atmosphere similar to South Beach W in Miami or Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas. To create such atmosphere large number of great bars are necessary, and W Barcelona delivers.

Restaurants

Initially I was surprised by the limited choices of restaurants at this hotel, till I realized that most people eat on the town and come back to W to drink, dance and party. Don’t get me wrong. There are 2 restaurants serving buffet style breakfast, so we never had to wait in line, and there is a high end and casual restaurant choice.

Breakfast

Buffet style breakfast is included for Platinum SPG guests at Wave restaurant and offers very good choices and variety.

Bravo24

SALT

Restaurant & Beach Club From SALT’s expansive terrace, gaze at the clear blue Mediterranean that sets the backdrop for an unforgettable day or night. Mix and mingle with innovative burgers and perfectly matched cocktails, plus shared plates and guilty pleasures.

One very nice option is the choice of 4 restaurants downstairs on the beach side of the hotel, which are independently owned and operated. You can not charge you food to the room, but prices are more reasonable than in the hotel and view and service is very good.

Swimming Pool

W Hotel has a large outdoor infinity swimming pool that is open to all customers. It is unheated. The opening hours of the pool depend on the weather. The pool is surrounded by loungers and cabanas that can be reserved. There is also a cocktail bar next to the pool, and DJ spins there in the evening.

This is where all the action is during a day and in the evening. It is not unusual to bump into a model photoshoot.

There is a smaller heated pool on the side of the hotel. You can enter it next to the fitness area. It is more quiet and offers more privacy.

Fitness center

There is also fitness center that is available in the hotel. It is a good size and never crowded. It is open to all hotel customers and is open 24 hours a day every day of the week. Equipment in the gym includes treadmills, elliptical machines, cycling machines, free weights and weight machines. If you like to run outside, beachside boardwalk is long and safe, offering great jugging options.

Bliss Spa

The hotel contains a wonderful spa – Bliss Spa. There is another, heated pool in this section. Depending on the type of room that you have booked, use of the spa may be included in the room price. If not, you can use the spa for an extra fee per day. Other services in the spa include lockers, showers, saunas, cabanas and jacuzzi. Treatments such as manicures, facials and massages, are offered as well, but if hotel is full, you might consider booking them in advance.
